Why Multimedia Matters

Audio and video clips can greatly enhance your content and the user experience. They can also present barriers to users with slow connections, older devices, hearing or vision difficulties, or highly secure setups. It is important to judge when and how to use audio and video to help users, and when to abstain.

Points to Remember

Any embedded video or audio clip should be of good quality.
Different devices can support video and audio players differently, so default settings may need to be adjusted.
Embedded videos can significantly slow web page load times, so do not use more than 1 or 2 per page. If you need to include more videos, we can create a YouTube playlist and embed that.
Embedded video and audio should never be set to autoplay.
Generally, if a web page containing a video or audio clip, image slideshow, etc. does not provide an embed code or RSS feed, we will not be able to embed it in our own pages. In this case, a simple link to that web page will suffice.
When possible, provide a transcript.
Be sure to check that the content you want to use is not restricted by copyright. Instead, use items we own or that have a Creative Commons license that provides permission to use the content.
