Why Images Matter

From a user experience standpoint, images are not just “decoration” for pages - they are eye-catching, informative content. On most pages, images should be used sparingly and only to illustrate the topic at hand. They should be of high quality, but optimized for quick web loading.

Points to Remember

Use images sparingly on most pages, and only to illustrate the topic at hand. Do not use images just to break up text - instead, use less text.

The MaxxSouth Digital Media Center or the Digital Preservation and Access Unit may be able to provide some images; they or Web Technologies can optimize images you find elsewhere.
Use inviting, friendly, active images, with smiling, helpful employees, up-to-date equipment and signage, and busy students working together.
Avoid shots of empty rooms or stark building shots, or photos of former employees who have since left the Libraries.
Never use clipart or cartoony images unless appropriate and approved.
Always provide captions and alt tags for images. This is required for greater accessibility.
Preserve the aspect ratio of images - don’t stretch them vertically or horizontally.
Use color photos whenever possible; avoid black-and-white photos unless they are most appropriate.
Avoid photos of messy or disorganized spaces - clean it up before you take the photo.
Be sure to check that the image you want to use is not restricted by copyright. Instead, use images we own or that have a Creative Commons license that provides permission to use the image.
Credit as appropriate for any photos you find on the Internet or receive from a source outside MSU Libraries.
Resist the urge to completely replace text with images. Even the most "common" imagery can be easily misinterpreted or ignored.
Avoid using images that have important text on them. These are inaccessible to users using screen readers and other assistive technologies without extra accommodation.
