Video Games in Research

This guide is designed to help researchers who have questions about adding video games to their research.

How to search for Video Game research

While there have been many articles, books, and exhibits dealing with video game research, these can be difficult to find. This is mainly due to there not being a centralized database of publications dealing with video game research. While it is possible to find research with video games in the MSU databases,  one of the best ways to search for video game research is Google Scholar. However, research dealing with Serious Games can be found in Scopus. For an in depth guide on how to use Google Scholar click here

To find video game publications easily,  there are two general methods.

1) Input the title of the video game into the search bar

From there you should get results of various publications dealing with the game title.

2) For some game titles searches will be more difficult unless you add "game" to your search.  One example is the game "Fallout". If you search the term "Fallout", you will get results not necessarily related to video games. By adding the term "game", you will get more accurate searches. Also it is possible to search for specific terms with a game, such as Art and Assassin's Creed.

Here is an example of a search dealing with the Fallout games and AI.

Here are some of the search results.
