This guide is designed to help researchers who have questions about adding video games to their research.

Glossary of Gaming Terms

While video games are not a new medium, there is terminology that players may be familiar with that those who are new to the genre may not. Here are some common terms that refer to video game developers, graphics, and stores.


2D: Games which have two dimensional graphics.

3D: Games which are rendered in three dimensional graphics

AAA  (also known as triple A): These are large gaming publishers and studios which commonly have multi-million dollar budgets. Some examples are EA Games and Bethesda.

DLC (Downloadable Content): This is additional content released by gaming developers and publishers which users can download to inhance a the original release of a game, usually for an extra cost. DLCs  vary and can include cosmetic items, bonus content, etc.

Early Access: An Early Access game is one that is not fully released and is still in a development stage.

GOG.com:  This site is a digital store for video games and films and is owned by CD Projekt.

Indie:  These are games which are developed and published by smaller studios without support from larger publishers.

Mods (modding, modification): Gaming mods are downloadable content for games that are created by players or fans of the games, rather than developers. This modifications can vary from bug fixes, cosmetic enhancements, bonus content, to complete different games that are created using the developers' gaming engine.

Pixel (pixel art): These are games where images are created using only pixels. As such, these games tend to have a blocky appearance.

Steam: This site is a major digital store for video games and is owned by the Valve corporation. Steam is a major distributor of VR programs, Indie games, along with AAA titles.
