Publishing an Online Open Access Journal

This guide provides advice and resources for faculty, staff, or students who are considering starting an online open access journal. MSU Libraries provides a hosting platform and technical support.

Creative Commons

Consider using a Creative Commons (CC) license for your journal (https://creativecommons.org/use-remix/cc-licenses/). The CC website will help you determine the best license. A CC license is required for submission to the Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ).

The most common CC license for open access journals:

CC-BY: Articles published in Name of Journal are licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/.

OR

CC-BY-NA: Articles published in Name of Journal are licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial 4.0 International License https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc/4.0/.
