Generative AI: An Introduction

This guide provides an introduction to generative AI.

What is Generative AI?

There are many definitions of generative AI.  One from the National Library Medicine: "Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a system of algorithms or computer processes that can create novel output in text, images or other media based on user prompts."  Generative AI tools process large amounts of data (including text and images from the Internet) and generate patterns from this data to create new content.

Generative AI provides new and exciting opportunities for researchers.  Ideally, these tools are used in collaboration with existing Library research databases and services.

Before using generative AI tools (or applications), researchers should be aware of how these tools gather and process data and the ethical concerns surrounding their production. Users should also be cognizant of the context of generative AI usage; what is acceptable in one situation may be unacceptable in a different context.   AI technology and guidelines are constantly evolving, so users are encouraged to always consult with their instructor, journal publisher, or grant agency for the latest information related to the acceptable use of generative AI tools.
