Research Guides

This guide provides on overview of how to use Mendeley to create a personal database of references that can be inserted into documents created with Word.

Mendeley Institutional Edition Available for MSU Faculty, Staff, and Students

Mendeley is a reference manager that allows you to create a personal database of references related to your research, and it allows you to insert citations into Word using any one of hundreds of citation styles. If you are collaborating with other researchers, Mendeley allows you to share references.

There is a free version of Mendeley that anyone can sign up for. However, MSU faculty, staff, and students have access to Mendeley Institutional Edition, which provides more storage space for PDFs and more functionality.

As of 10/7/2019, Mendeley is not compatible with screen readers.

As of 3/25/2020, Mendeley has indicated the following compatibility issues that may affect a number of users. For complete information on supported operating systems, web browsers, and word processors, see this page from Mendeley Support

  • "Mendeley Desktop does not yet support OSX Mojave and above."
  • "[t]he Mendeley Desktop Word plugin is not officially supported with click-to-run versions of Microsoft Word, and we cannot offer support for any issues experienced using these versions."
  • Mendeley Group creation can only be done in the desktop version. It has been disabled in the web version.
