Political Science and Public Administration (PSPA)

Pi Alpha Alpha is the national honor society for the field of public affairs and public administration. Those universities and colleges that are members of the National Association of Schools of Public Affairs and Administration (NASPAA) are eligible to establish a PAA Chapter.

The purpose of this society is to encourage and recognize outstanding scholarship and accomplishment in public affairs and administration.

Mississippi Model Security Council (MMSC) is a long-standing tradition at Mississippi State University that dates back to 1979. MMSC is administered through the Department of Political Science and Public Administration.

As a Model United Nations entity, MMSC is an academic simulation of the United Nations Security Council that aims to educate participants about international relations, public responsibility, effective communication, globalization and multilateral diplomacy.

Pi Sigma Alpha, the National Political Science Honor Society, is the only honor society for college and university students of government in the United States.

Membership in Pi Sigma Alpha is open to juniors, seniors, and graduate students currently enrolled in programs of political science in institutions where chapters are located.

Named after the great MSU alumni, Senator John C. Stennis and Congressman G.V. Sonny Montgomery, the Stennis-Montgomery Association (SMA) allows students of all backgrounds and academic disciplines to become active on the political scene. Each year the most dedicated members of the organization visit Washington D.C. , to meet and network with MSU alumni and other prominent political figures.

The Stennis-Montgomery Assiciation is a non-partisan student organization which is heavily involved on the Mississippi State Campus. The purpose of the organization is to provide opportunities for students to learn more about the role of politics in Mississippi . Ultimately, the Stennis-Montgomery Association will allow Mississippi State University’s influence in the arena of political decision-making to become as prominent as the other great successes of the “People’s University.”

The MSU College Democrats train and engage new generations of Democratic activists and shape the Democratic Party with voices from America's youth. In election years, the MSU College Democrats work hard to mobilize student voters and recruit volunteers for Democratic campaigns, from local Boards of Aldermen to President of the United States.

With over 800 members, College Republicans is one of the largest organizations at Mississippi State. College Republicans is an educational and political organization with several objectives. One is to promote the ideas and values of the Republican Party. Another is to increase political awareness on the Mississippi State campus. College Republicans is also the doorway to becoming politically active on the local, state, and federal levels. Voter registration drives and grassroots campaigning are just some of the ways the members of College Republicans get involved with the Republican Party.

Established in 1977, the Mississippi State University Pre Law Society (PLS) is one of the oldest pre-law societies in the country. Membership in PLS is a must for anyone who is interested in law school. Because MSU does not have a law school, PLS serves as ground zero for information about law school, lawyers, and the legal system, and provides assistance in the law school application process. It is one of the few pre-law societies lead by a practicing attorney.

Every year during Spring Semester, PLS officers select an MSU Distinguished Jurist Award Winner. PLS established the Award in 1977. Though there is no set criteria for winning the award, PLS usually gives great consideration to lawyers and judges who attended Mississippi State, who have a connection with the university, or who have attained great national prominence as a judge or lawyer and may not have received the recognition PLS feels he or she deserves.
