How to Cite Patents?

These are some frequently used styles for citing patents:

ACS (American Chemical Society) Style

Reference list:

Format: Inventor(s) name, patent title, patent number, and year of publication. 

Example:

White; M.G.; Iretski; A.V.; Weigel, S. J.; Chiang, R. L.; Brzozowski, J. R. Adsorbents, Methods of Preparation, and Methods of Use Thereof. U.S. Patent 7,442,232, October 28, 2008.
[Note: If available, indicate the patent stage (Patent, Patent Application, etc.)]

In-text citations:

ACS suggests citing references in text in one of three ways: superscript, italic numbers in parentheses, or author-date.

Example:

High performance silicon-based coating compositions were introduced by Fish.7
Fish (7) reported high performance silicon-based coating compositions.
High performance silicon-based coating compositions were introduced. (Fish et.al., 2024)


APA (American Psychological Association) Style (7th ed.)

Reference list:

Format: Inventor(s) ame, year the patent was issued, patent title, patent number, URL if available.

Example:

Scheiner, R. C., Eves, M., Guney, M., & De Vries, C. (2024). Textile seal-forming structure with multiple curvatures (U.S. Patent No. 12,115,314). U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.

In-text citations:

Format: Name, year the patent was issued.

Example:

(Scheiner, et al., 2024)

IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) Style

Reference list:

Format:
[#]    Name of the invention, by Inventor(s) initial(s). Surname(s). (Year, Abbrev. Month Day). Patent Number. [Type of medium]. Available: URL.
